Cross Campus Student Leader Expectations
STUDENT EXPECTATIONS
DISCIPLESHIP GROUPS
So glad you are interested in helping students grow in their relationship with Christ. Below is the basic understanding of what these small groups are and the basic expectations of you, the studentleader.
1. Basic Overview
a. What are Cross Campus small groups
i. We are on our 4th year at BCHS
ii. They are discipleship groups, which means we model life on life
1. Learning about Jesus together (Word, Spirit & Life Experience)
2. Becoming like Jesus (First we must become Sons & Daughters)
3. Living like Jesus lived (Do what he did, love what he loved)
b. How do these groups operate
i. They are invitational.
1. People invite people to join
2. They grow relationally.
3. There is no obligation to attend or membership required
ii. We gather into small groups for people to be known
1. It’s hard to be known in large groups, so we go small
2. Student leaders lead
3. Adults support the student leaders
iii. We read scriptures so we can learn to hear.
1. “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” [Romans 10:17]
iv. We ask questions so we can be understood.
1. We want to hear what you think, so we create an environment for you to speak
v. We meet regularly so we can grow
1. Showing up is the most powerful example you can set
vi. We empower students to lead so they can become
1. We create opportunities for students to exercise their faith
2. Be doing so, you grow in your gifting
3. As you grow in your gifting, you become who God created you to be
c. Why student leadership
i. Because you are the future hope of the Church
2. Why are groups like these important
a. Because students have so much authority to speak, model and influence Jesus to their peers.
b. Environments that allow for student-to-student discipleship are extremely rare
c. It gives adults an opportunity to engage with the discipleship of the next generation
3. Expectations of Student Leaders
a. Show up, consistently. Communicate if you can’t
b. Be prepared. Do the work. Read scriptures & Devotion, journal through questions and be prepared to help facilitate a conversation around the devotion topic.
c. Facilitate the conversation in your small group
d. Reach out to students in your group weekly
e. Work with the team of leaders that helps to oversee your group
f. Be a disciple
g. At the end of the day, you’re responsible for your group.
h. Lean on your adult leader for help
4. Do’s & Don’ts
a. Don’t talk too much. Have restraint. Everyone needs to have a voice.
b. Don’t have all the answers. Ask questions, draw the answers out of the group
c. Don’t be afraid to ask for wisdom from others in your group about tough theology or relational situtations
d. Don’t teach, share from your personal experience and then allow the next person to share
e. Do engage in the conversation
f. Do express your experiences and understanding of the topic or scripture
5. Most common issues
a. Someone talks too much
b. Small group leaders want to teach on the devotion
c. Kids afraid to talk
d. Nobody did the reading
e. Distractions
6. Oversite
a. Although these groups are student lead, there are parents or adults assigned to oversee the groups so they are safe. Parents ultimately are responsible for safety of each group
b. All parent report issues to Henry Schaeffer if they have issues they cannot deal with in their groups.
c. Henry and Jay Johnson discuss any issues need further attention
d. There is a chain of command about Henry & Jay if there is greater help needed.
7. When do we begin?
a. Big groups start Wednesday September 23rd at BCHS
b. Kickoff BBQ Hangout Sunday September 20th at BCHS
c. Leadership Team small group begins
i. Wednesday Morning September 2nd 6:30am at BCHS
ii. Wednesday Morning September 9th 6:30am at BCHS
iii. Wednesday Morning September 16th 6:30am at BCHS
