18. I am the Bread of Life

18. I am the Bread of Life

“Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you.” [John‬ ‭6‬:‭27‬]

We are all going to work for something. The question is, what are you working for?  Why do you do what you do?  What are the underlying operating procedures that drive your work, your life?  Jesus is addressing a crowd that he supernaturally feed days earlier and now, they are back hungering for more food.  Hunger was a real thing for these people. They often went without food, for multiple days.  Going without was a real part of their lives, not by choice but through life circumstances.  Let’s be honest, barley loaves, and dried fish are not exactly a feast to us, but when you are starving it is a life giving nourishment.  Hunger was driving their decision to follow Jesus. What is driving you?  Jesus gave himself to them in a nourishing way to help them see what they were really seeking.

“Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.” [John‬ ‭6‬:‭26‬]

What are you seeking in Jesus?  The crowds came back, not for miracles, but for food. They had an agenda and so do we. No shame in it, but be honest with yourself and name it, so you have a starting point. Like I came to Jesus seeking an out from my life’s circumstances and I realized that I didn’t even know who he was. Jesus called the people out, you came for food I get it.  But there is a deeper hungering inside of you that only I, Jesus can satisfy.  But you have to be honest about what you are truly seeking first.

“Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” [John‬ ‭6‬:‭35‬]

What are you hungering for?  Can Jesus actually be enough, can he really satisfy our hunger our longing.  Think about all the things you desire, want and are craving.  How does Jesus satisfy your hunger and desire.  The Bible says, “taste and see that the Lord is good”.  Have you tasted?  Have you seen for yourself that the lord is good?  It takes a step of faith to find the answer to that question.  Every time we take communion, when we eat of the bread which is his body, we declare that he is enough, Until he returns in fullness.

“And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”” [Luke‬ ‭22‬:‭19‬]

Jesus is the Bread of Life. Eat of His flesh and drink of His blood. For in it, by faith in His name, do we have eternal life.  Hunger and thirst are the evidence of  food and water. Spirits that hunger and thirst for righteousness are the evidence of Christ. We do not hunger and thirst for that which there is no remedy of.

“But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”” [John‬ ‭6‬:‭50‬-‭51‬]

So feast on his body and drink his blood for this is where your mortal lives meet eternal life.  Stay thirsty my friends.

“Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink.”
‭‭[John‬ ‭6‬:‭53‬-‭55‬]

Discussion Questions:

  1.  What are you working for? (Fame, fortune, popularity, people pleasing, reputation, success, ego, pride, parents or respect?). Or something more noble in Christ?
  2. Why are you seeking Jesus? (Get out of Jail free card, self-righteousness, a relationship with a girl or boy, dynamic leader, looks good on a resume). Or is it out of love?
  3. What should we work for?  Jesus says don’t work for food that spoils but the work is to believe in the one God sent. So what does it look like to work for that end.
  4. What are you hungering for?  What do you really want, be honest with yourself so God can show you how to be satisfied with His presence alone.
  5. How can Jesus’ flesh be real food and his blood be real drink. How can his body and his blood really satisfy us?

THIS WEEKS MISSION:

Read John chapter 6, re-read the devotion again and answer the five questions above in the form of a prayer to God. Give him the honesty of where you are actually at and allow him to transform your fleshy desires into spiritual desire for him alone.
