12. Who is Jesus

12. Who is Jesus

We are about to embark on a 12 week journey through the book of John with one priority in mind, getting to know Jesus better.  So make a commitment to read through John with us and keep a journal of all the things God showed you through the process.  Let’s begin.

John 1:14

”And the word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only son of the Father full of grace and truth.”

We have spent a lot of time talking about Jesus and reading about him. So my questions to you today is, do you know him?  Or are you the one who knows a lot about him, but doesn’t know him personally?  Let’s begin, at the beginning, a journey through the book of John, getting to know Jesus better.

(verse 2). “He was in the beginning with God.”

Who is the “He” John is referring to here?  As you read through Chapter 1 you will understand that the “He” referred to here is Jesus. So let’s read through [John 1:1-14] and understand more of who he, Jesus is.

(v.1)  “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

Jesus = In the beginning = The Word = God

Jesus is the word of God, is with God, is God and has been with God since the beginning.

(v.3) “All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.”

“when he (God) marked out the foundations of the earth, then I (Jesus) was beside him (God), like a master workman, and I was daily his delight, rejoicing before him,”‭ ‭Proverbs‬ ‭8‬:‭29‬-‭30‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Jesus is also the master craftsman through which everything in creation was made.  Nothing that was made was made without Jesus.  Think about that for a moment.  Yes, God is the creator of the universe, but Jesus was the workman at his side that built creation.  Have you imagined Jesus with his tool belt on. His tools might look a little different than ours. Do we really know him?

(v.4)  “In him (Jesus) was life, and that life was the light of men.”

“Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.”
[‭‭Genesis‬ ‭2‬:‭7]

The Breath of God, the spirit of Jesus was breathed into dust and man became a living creature.  So, Jesus is the craftsman/workman of creation and the breath of life that sustains it.  Jesus is life and that life is the light of the world.  Has the breath of God (spirit of Jesus) brought life and light to the dust that formed your body?

(v.12). “Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—”

Jesus is the redeemer savior of mankind.  To all who believe in him, he restores their relationship to God the Father and eternal life. In a fallen world over-run by darkness, a light has shown to show us the way.  He is the way, He is the light, he is the life, he is the breath, he is the workman that formed creation, he is the word, he was at the beginning and he is God.

(v.14)  “And the word became flesh and dwelt among us.”

All of that, became flesh and dwelt among us.  Born in a manger, wrapped in swaddling cloth’s, a child. Lived, breathed, loved, died, rose again imperishable and offers us an eternal, imperishable life.  That he would make his dwelling place in us through faith in his name.  And that the cycle would repeat in us, ‘the word becoming flesh and dwelling among us.’  Do you believe?  Do you know who Jesus is?

Scripture Reference:

‭‭[John‬ ‭1‬:‭1‬-‭14]
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

Discussion Questions:

  1.  What do you know about Jesus?  Think about what you believe is true about who Jesus is and write it down.
  2. What else does the Bible say about who Jesus is?  Look up scriptures.
  3. Do you know that Jesus breathed life and light into your body?  Shouldn’t we look different?
  4. What does it practically mean that Jesus is the workman who worked beside God to form the universe. How do you picture Jesus working.
  5. What is the work that Jesus is inviting you to do in his creation. Do you have a calling?
